Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo

Prof. Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo was born in Naples, currently he is Full Professor and holds the Chair of Plastic Surgery at Sapienza, University of Rome, where he runs the university program for the Board in Plastic Surgery, and from 2003 is Head of Plastic Surgery Unit at Sant’Andrea Hospital.

He started his training on 1984 at University of Naples, and continued from 1987 to 1990 at University of Göteborg, Sweden, where he achieved Fellowships in “cleft lip and palate”, “craniofacial surgery”, “breast surgery” and “reconstructive microsurgery”. Since 1990 he achieved both the Italian and the Swedish Board in Plastic Surgery, and his main interest has been in Reconstructive Microsurgery, specially focusing on breast reconstruction with DIEP flap and Latissimus Dorsi flap procedures. The intense activity in this field led him to start and chair, since 2007 a University Master Course on Breast Reconstruction, at Sapienza University of Rome, and from 2009 a Fellowship on Clinical and Experimental Reconstructive Microsurgery at the Department of Biosciences, Tecnopolo, in Rome.

Over the last years, he has been focusing on the study of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, and Face Allotrasplantation in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Health. The commitment and contribution to the scientific research in plastic surgery brought national and international recognition, with the consequent appointment as Secretary General of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS), since May 2014. Recently he was awarded with Honorary Professorship in Plastic Surgery at University of Novi Sad, Serbia, and Honorary Member of the Serbian Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.

His scientific effort produced 141 original papers and 33 book chapters.



Prof. Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo achieved on 1984 at the age of 23 years, the Medical Doctor Degree, at the Federico II, University of Naples, and qualified as Medical Practitioner in Italy. From 1987 to 1990 he completed his clinical fellowship in “Breast Surgery”, “Cleft Lip and Palate”, “Cranio-maxillo-facial Surgery”, and “Reconstructive Microsurgery” at Sahgrenska Sjukhuset, Göteborg University, Sweden. In 1989 he qualified as Specialist in Plastic Surgery, from the Federico II, University of Naples. In 1994 he completed the Ph.D. program in Plastic Surgery, at University of Rome La Sapienza, later in 1999 he qualified as Medical Practitioner and as Specialist in Plastic Surgery, in Sweden.

From 1988 to 2014, he attended many international institutions to improve his knowledge, as visiting fellow at Akademiska Sjukhuset University of Uppsala, Karolinska Hospital and Sabbatsberg Hospital University of Stockholm, University of Modena, University of Catania, University of Berlin, Sahlgrenska Hospital University of Göteborg, Mount Vernon Hospital University of London, Hopital Necker and Clinic Bizet, University of Paris, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital University Taipei, Center for Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction New York University Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital Harvard Medical School.


Prof. Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo ha conseguito nel 1984 all’età di 23 anni la Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia, e l’Abilitazione all’esercizio della professione all’Università di Napoli. Dal 1984 al 1990, ha completato le clinical fellowship in “Breast Surgery”, “Cleft Lip and Palate”, “Cranio-maxillo-facial Surgery”, and “Reconstructive Microsurgery” presso l’Ospedale Sahhlgrenska, Università di Göteborg, Svezia. Nel 1989 ha conseguito la Specializzazione in Chirurgia Plastica all’Università di Napoli, Federico II. Nel 1994 ha completato il corso di Dottorato di Ricerca in Chirurgia Plastica all’università di Roma La Sapienza, e successivamente nel 1999 ha conseguito l'Abilitazione all’esercizio della professione e la Specializzazione in Chirurgia Plastica in Svezia.
